George Provopoulos has a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics, Essex University and holds a Master of Arts in Economics, Essex University as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Department of Economics from University of Athens. Since November 2015 he is Chairman of the Board Eurobank Bulgaria AD. He was Governor of the Bank of Greece and Member of the Governing Council of the ECB (2008 – 2014). As Governor, he managed the complete restructuring of the banking system in the midst of an economic and financial crisis. He was Vice Chairman & Managing Director at Piraeus Bank (2006 – 2008). From 2004 –2006 he was Chairman of the Board and CEO of Emporiki Bank and Chief Economist at Alpha Bank from January 1994 – March 2004. He held the position of the General Manager at the Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research (1993 – 1997). From 1990-1993 he was Deputy Governor at the Bank of Greece and in 1989 Chairman of the Council of Economic Experts.
