George Papaconstantinou

George Papaconstantinou is an economist, holding a B.Sc. and a Ph.D in Economics from the London School of Economics. He has served government as Minister of Finance (2009-2011) and Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change (2011-2012), and was previously a member of parliament (2077-2009 9) and an MEP (2009). As Finance Minister, he played a key role during the Eurozone crisis, negotiating Greece’s first loan agreement with the EU and the IMF. He has published his account of the crisis in the book Game Over – The Inside Story of the Greek Crisis.

In the earlier part of his career, Dr. Papaconstantinou was a senior economist at the OECD, a Board member of the largest telecoms company in Greece, taught at the Athens University of Economics and Business and consulted for the European Commission. Since leaving public office, his work has focused on economic and financial policy-related analysis. He is currently a part-time Professor at the School of Transnational Governance of the European University Institute. At the EUI, he is jointly coordinating the Transformation of Global Governance project, whose aim is to decipher the transformation of global governance under way in a series of fields and assess the effectiveness of the emerging governance arrangements.
